UAE petrol prices to rise for third time in a year after Eid

Next price hike on petrol prices in UAE wll include diesel, Special and E-plus fuel, according to sources from Adnoc

Petrol prices

Abu Dhabi: Petrol prices in the UAE are set to rise a third time this year. Sources from oil company Adnoc told Gulf News that the fuel distribution companies are about to increase price on fuel.

The source, who wanted to remain anonymous, added that the increase includes Special, E-plus and Diesel and will become effective "a few weeks after Eid holiday."

Gulf News reported three months ago that price increases on petrol will take place in three stages before the end of the year 2010. This will become the third increase. A senior person at Adnoc told Gulf News that the company refuses to impose additional increases to not provoke people who "already suffer from high and unreasonable prices" after the second increase of last month.

Significant pressure

However, he said that Adnoc is subject to significant pressure from supplier such as Enoc, Epco and others who are requesting another increase to be effective immediately.

The source added that in private meetings of the boards of directors of the fuel suppliers it turned out that they fear to report significant losses if the prices remain at the current levels. Gulf News learnt that the increase will be 20 fils per litre. This means that the cost of Special fuel will increase from Dh1.72 to Dh1.92 per litre.

The price of E-plus will increase from Dh1.61 to Dh1.81. Diesel will increase from Dh2,35 to Dh2,55 per litre.

The source said that the all three fuel companies are lobbying for the petrol price to reach up to Dh2,50 by the end of the year. The tactic, he said, is to impose sudden changes at different stages after having implemented three increases already. However the decision to rise prices further will depend on the consumers' reaction to the third increase.

The respective companies refused to comment on the issue.

Gulf News surveyed a number of Emiratis who expressed extreme dissatisfaction with the increases which they felt being "dramatic". They unanimously stated that the price of oil in the UAE is now double than in any other country in the GCC.

"I travelled with my friends to Saudi Arabia last week and filled the tank of a car with a six-cylinder engine for about Dh 85, the same would cost about Dh155 in the UAE," Khalid Al Hammadi said.

"I travelled to Qatar via Saudi Arabia and filled my eight-cylinder four wheel drive for Dh120, which would be about Dh210 in the UAE," Adel Ahmad said. "I travelled to the United States in the summer vacation in July, I rented a six cylinder caravan, filled the tank for Dh145, which would be about Dh200 in the UAE," said Khalid Ahmad Al Hammadi.

Just when I think I have saved enough to purchase a spanking new Range Rover for myself :/

The Stig's BBC book row

The Stig's BBC book row

The BBC is attempting to stop 'Top Gear's The Stig from releasing his autobiography.

The stunt racing driver's real identity has been a mystery since he was introduced to the show in 2003, and both his popularity and that of the show is partly due to his anonymity, remaining hidden behind a helmet and black visor.

If the autobiography is published, it will reveal the true identity of the driver - which the BBC says will tarnish the show's reputation and violate The Stig's confidentiality agreement.

A BBC source told the Daily Mail newspaper: "The BBC is in a legal dispute over the publication of a book relating to 'Top Gear' as this breaches agreed contractual and confidentiality obligations relating to the show.

"This is absolutely about confidentiality. These are such unusual circumstances because he is anonymous."

Lawyers for the BBC and the publishers of the autobiography are now locked in a legal battle, which could lead to The Stig either quitting or being axed from the show.

The real identity of the driver is known by only a small number of BBC executives and the show's presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.

The Stig featured on the show is the programme's second after the identity of the first, driver Perry McCarthy, was revealed in 2002.

Many people have been linked to the role, including ex-Formula One champion Damon Hill, racing driver Julian Bailey and stunt driver Ben Collins.

The show has played tricks on viewers in the past, such as having Formula One racing champ Michael Schumacher climb out of The Stig's suit and present himself as the mystery driver.

The Stig is thought to earn around £10,000 for each show he appears in, racing a number of cars and providing training to celebrities in the 'Star In A Reasonably Priced Car' segment of the show. Although he gives them direction, he does so in full costume, thus preserving his anonymity.

Revealed: Android Honeycomb next up from Google | News | TechRadar UK

Media_httpmashablecom_oubka

Google is set to call the next iteration of its mobile OS Android Honeycomb, following on from the tablet-friendly Gingerbread platform.

Multiple sources have confirmed to TechRadar that the next version will be called Honeycomb, although details of what this upgrade will bring are still sketchy.

It's likely that it will be more of an incremental upgrade, in the same manner as Android 2.2 (Froyo) was to Android 2.1 (Éclair) as Google seeks to perfect the new platform on tablets and high-end smartphones.

That means Android Honeycomb will probably be Android 3.1 or Android 3.2, rather than a leap to the unimaginable magic of Android 4.0.

Honeycomb – a surefire way to eventual baldness

We've contacted Google about the new name, and unsurprisingly got no comment, but given each new Android iteration is named after sweets and cakes, there's not a lot to choose from.

Intriguingly, a quick Google search for 'Android Honeycomb' shows a few sites with the phrase present - but nowhere to be found when looking at the articles and sites in depth.

Gingerbread is due out towards the end of the year (or possibly leaking into 2011) with tablets from Toshiba and Samsung likely to make use of the upgrade, which will only work with fast processors and high-res screens.

However, it will be interesting to see where Android Honeycomb machines land in the marketplace against Google Chrome OS tablets, which we should start seeing in November onwards – is there a large enough tablet market to sustain two operating systems from the same manufacturer?
